In 1942, a variant of the StuG III Ausf. F was designed with a 105 mm (4.1 in) howitzer instead of the 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/43 cannon. This became the Sturmhaubitze 42.
In CoH and OMG the Sturmhaubitze 42 is commonly abbreviated Stuh 42, based on a Panzer IV chassis instead of a Panzer III, and it only available to the Blitzkrieg Doctrine of the Wehrmacht.
History
These new vehicles, designated StuH 42 (Sturmhaubitze 42, Sd.Kfz 142/2), were designed to provide infantry support with the increased number of StuG III Ausf. F/8 and Ausf. Gs being used in the anti-tank role. The StuH 42 mounted a variant of the 10.5 cm leFH 18 howitzer, modified to be electrically fired and fitted with a muzzle brake. Later models were built from StuG III Ausf. G chassis as well as StuG III Ausf. F and Ausf. F/8 chassis. 1,211 StuH 42 were produced from October 1942 to 1945.
The StuH 42, short for Sturmhaubitze 42 (Assault Howitzer) was an assault gun developed from the Panzer III chassis, similar to the StuG III G assault guns that supported the infantry divisions. Unlike the StuG III G and StuG IV, the StuH 42's 10.5cm gun was a lower velocity field gun for fire support against softer targets. Its role was to knock-out defenses that were holding up the infantry advance, though its gun could defeat light armor at short range. Not many StuH 42s were made through-out the war, and the need fell sharply when Germany was put on the defense.
Tactics & Tips
- StuHs are excellent at clearing out buildings that have infantry inside of them, or demolishing base structures.
- The StuH's gun is not useful against heavy armor, and is better suited against light armor or infantry.
- The weapon's splash radius is much higher than the actual target damage. Whenever you engage large groups of infantry, use the 'Attack Ground' command instead of right-clicking an enemy squad. You'll notice a huge difference.
