The SdKfz 234 (Sonderkraftfahrzeug 234, or special purpose vehicle 234) was an eight-wheeled armored car used by the German Army in the Second World War. It broadly resembles the SdKfz 231 (8 rad).

This version was armed with a 5 cm KwK 39/1 L/60 very similar to the weapon previously used on the later main production versions of the Panzerkampfwagen III.

A "Puma".

History

Developed from the Büssing-NAG SdKfz 232, which appeared in 1936, design of the Sd Kfz 234 began in 1940. It was to have a monocoque chassis with eight wheels, like its predecessors, and an air cooled engine for use in North Africa.

Chassis were built by Büssing-NAG in Leipzig-Wahren, while armored bodies were provided by Deutsche Edelstahlwerke of Krefeld and turrets by Daimler Benz in Berlin-Marienfeld and Schichau of Elbing, with engines from Ringhoffer-Tatra-Werke AG of Nesseldorf.

It weighed nearly 12 tons but was still capable of 85 km/h (53 mph). It was one of the best armored cars available, mainly due to the cannon which made it capable of countering many medium tanks as well as infantry. The armored car could be driven backwards by the radio operator in an emergency as well. Production started in 1943 but was stopped in the second half of 1944. The other three 234 variants were kept in production until the end of the war.

Tactics & Tips

  • Use them to engage enemy infantry and light vehicles with its upgraded main gun.
  • When a facing a British opponent with a number of Stuarts, a fairly quick solution to this bring in the Puma with a 50mm gun. This allows it to win in a slug fest against the Stuart and gives it the ability to "snipe" Infantry Sections.
