A sapper is a British combat engineer.

History

A Sapper is an individual usually in British or Commonwealth military service. Called Combat Engineers by the Americans, Pioneers by the Germans, Génies by the French and Sapers by the Poles, a Sapper may perform any of a variety of tasks under combat conditions. Such tasks typically include bridge-building, laying or clearing minefields, demolitions, field defenses as well as building, road and airfield construction and repair. In other words, the sapper's tasks now involve facilitating movement of allied forces and impeding movement of the enemy's. Sapper (abbreviated Spr) is the Royal Engineers' equivalent of Private. This is also the case within the Canadian, Royal Australian Engineers and Royal New Zealand Engineers. The term Sapper was introduced in 1856 when the Corps of Royal Sappers and Miners was amalgamated with the officer Corps of Royal Engineers to form the Corps of Royal Engineers.

Upgrades

Like in VCoH, Sappers have 3 "professions" to choose from.

  • Demolitions and Disposal Squad (40 munitions) Upgrades the Sapper squad with 1 mine detector, 2 timed Demolition Charges uses, and they do not need a Lieutenant to move at full speed in enemy territory.
  • PIAT Sappers (80 munitions) Equips the Sapper squad with two PIATs.
  • Expert Repair Sappers (80 munitions) Allows the Sappers to over-repair, and to repair with little to no wear-and-tear.

All Sappers can be equipped with mines (35 munitions, two uses), Lieutenants (no speed debuff in enemy territory), and smoke grenades. They can also buy a Casualty Clearing Station for 120 munitions. Purchasing this for one Sapper allows any Sapper in your company to deploy it, but it can only be used once.

Tactics & Tips

  • Give your vetted Sappers the right upgrades to complement their bonuses. Vet 2 Sappers get an accuracy buff with PIATs and thus should be used for PIAT duty, and vet 3 Sappers repair faster, so they should be given Expert Repair.
  • Demolitions and Disposal Sappers are very useful in the early game. They can detect mines, more importantly, use their demo charges to destroy shot-blockers to give your emplacements line-of-sight. Also try using demo charges to destroy key buildings: remember, Brits can build their own emplacements, whereas everyone else has to rely on whatever buildings they find on the map.
  • Always keep your Sappers at a distance from the enemy, preferably in cover. Unlike Engineers and Pioneers, they have rifles, and don't need to be at close range to do damage.
  • When constructing emplacements, wire off key locations so infantry with panzershrecks can't take them out easily. This is especially effective with the Bofors AA gun, when they are great, at range, against infantry.
