The Panzerkampfwagen IV (Pz.Kpfw. IV), commonly known as the Panzer IV, was a medium tank developed in Germany in the late 1930s and used extensively during the Second World War.
History
Designed as an infantry-support tank, the Panzer IV was not originally intended to engage enemy armor—that function was performed by the lighter, faster Panzer III. However, with the flaws of the pre-war doctrine of separate 'infantry' and 'cavalry' tanks becoming apparent in combat, the Panzer IV soon assumed the tank-fighting role of its increasingly obsolescent cousin. The most widely manufactured and deployed German tank of the Second World War, the Panzer IV was used as the base for many other fighting vehicles, including tank destroyers and self-propelled anti-aircraft guns. Robust and reliable, it saw service in all combat theaters, and has the distinction of being the only German tank to remain in continuous production throughout the war with over 8,500 produced between 1936 and 1945. Upgrades and design modifications, often made in response to the appearance of new Allied tanks, extended its service life. Generally these involved increasing the Panzer IV's armor protection or upgrading its weapons, although during the last months of the war and with Germany's pressing need for rapid replacement of losses, design changes also included retrograde measures to simplify and speed manufacture.
What started as an infantry support tank at the beginning of the war, with the early Panzer IV models, soon was up-armored and up-armed to an effective medium tank. The Panzer IV G and H tanks were effective and reliable, capable of defeating other medium tanks at range, and well-suited to any armored battle. It's 7.5cm KwK40 was better than the US and British 75mm guns on their Shermans and Cromwells, and it was not plagued with mechanical break-downs like the Panther. Its chassis was used as the basis for other vehicles, like the Wirbelwind, Ostwind, and StuG IV.
The Panzer IV for the Wehrmacht in Company of Heroes is a H model. It has a long barreled high velocity 75mm main gun to engage enemy armor.
Tactics & Tips
- The Panzer IV H is a good all-round tank capable of taking on most Allied Armour and infantry.
- Kite enemy infantry in order to avoid better enemy infantry AT accuracy against the Panzer IV.
- A MG 42 really helps the Panzer IV fight infantry. Side skirts increase it's defense against infantry wielded antitank weapons.
The Panzer IV for the Panzer Elite in Company of Heroes is a E model. It has a short barreled (snub nosed or snub barreled) low velocity 75mm main gun to engage infantry and emplacements.
Tactics & Tips
- The Panzer IV E is a infantry support tank capable of taking on Allied infantry and emplacements. It's an infantry chain saw. Let it cut down those rifle blobs with ease.
- A MG 42 helps the Panzer IV fight infantry. Side skirts increase it's defense against infantry wielded antitank weapons.
- Don't use it to counter armored vehicles.
