The SdKfz 2, better known as the Kleines Kettenkraftrad HK 101 or Kettenkrad for short (Ketten = tracks, krad = military abbreviation of the German word Kraftrad, the administrative German term for motorcycle), started its life as a light tractor for airborne troops. The vehicle was designed to be delivered by Junkers Ju 52 aircraft, though not by parachute. The vehicle had the advantage of being the only gun tractor small enough to fit inside the hold of the Ju 52.

A Kettenkrad

History

The Kettenkrad, short for Kettenkraftrad (Tracked Motorcycle), was a light utility vehicle for transport and towing. It was more mobile in off-road conditions than a motorcycle, and could tow equipment trailers and light guns such as the 3.7cm PaK36 anti-tank gun. It was also sometimes used as the main transport for motorized scout units in Panzer and Panzergrenadier divisions.

It first entered service in 1941. Due to Luftwaffe setbacks, the Kettenkrad was mainly used as a specialized, all-terrain supply vehicle. Although capable in that role, the Kettenkrad had limited cargo and towing capacity, and had not been built in large enough numbers for widespread use.

Only two significant sub-variations of the Kettenkrad were constructed, and production of the vehicle was stopped in 1944, at which time 8,345 had been constructed. (There was limited production of Kettenkrads after the war for civilian use).
