Context
After the bridge at Arnhem was lost during Operation Market Garden on the 21st of September, the 1st Airborne Division formed a perimeter around Oosterbeek, a town which joins onto Arnhem, including about a mile of river; Surrounded by German tanks, guns and infantry. The tanks came in and out of battalion positions, some of which had flame-throwers. The Germans dubbed the bitter house to house perimeter fighting "Der Hexenkessel" which means "The Witches Cauldron".
Territory & Point System
Territory winners are determined at the end of every cycle, two days. For every game won on that territory 10 points are awarded to that player's faction. Combat Events can increase the number of points allotted. This way they have no direct effect on Operation Market Garden game play, but still impact the campaign outcome. Also, suggested maps increase the points for the winner by five.
Momentum
Der Hexenkessel has added an additional momentum system. It determines who attacks and who defends on the Campaign Map. Two sectors are contested at a time, and the contested territories are updated with every cycle, two days.
Allies will start in Sector Eight on the offensive with two momentum and can not lose that momentum for four cycles, eight days. They can attack any designated adjacent sector. These are determined through a forum vote. For example, on the first cycle they may attack nine or ten because those were the outcome of the public vote.
After six cycles XXX Corps will arrive in sector 24, which gives the Allies one new region to attack from.
If they win (greater number of points in a territorial battle as compared to the enemy) they carry on that momentum. If they lose, then the axis gain a "momentum", and thus can choose to attack an allied territory
There are always 2 "momentum" in play, and thus two territorial battles going on at any given time.
Scenario Games
Players can arrange teams and take part in games against other arranged teams in scenario type games. For example, players sign up to do a two game match where after the first game they can not resupply their company and have to fight each other in the second game with worn down companies. Winning scenario games adds an additional five points for the territory system.
Win Conditions
The campaign last 14 cycles unless one of the factions is wiped off the map.
- Strategic Allied Victory: The Axis are wiped off the map.
- Tactical Allied Victory: Hold Arnhem (sectors 16, 12, 13, 18, 17) at the end of the campaign.
